The Geo Storm was an affordable, one of a kind car in the early 1990's. This car was sort of like a cross between a sports car and an economy car. The Storm was manufactured by Isuzu and was considered to be a re-badged Isuzu Impulse. It was sold by General Motors Corporation. For its time the Geo Storm had cool styling, and was very popular with the younger demographic. For many college kids it was a great first car.
The Storm came out in the model year 1990 and had a relatively short production run through 1993. The first year it only came in the 2+2 coupe body style. The next year it had an optional hatchback body style.
The Geo Storm had a relatively small engine. The base model came with a 1.6 liter single overhead cam engine that made only 95 horsepower. The more expensive Gsi Model had a 1.8 liter dual overhead cam engine that produced a whopping 130 horses. That doesn't sound like much of an increase but the Storm only weighed about 2200 pounds and was considered very light and peppy.
The Geo Storm came with the choice of an automatic or manual transmission. The 5 speed manual transmission was standard. The Gsi had an optional 4 speed automatic. The Storm was propelled by front wheel drive.
The Geo Storm was very fuel efficient for its time. The base model had an EPA estimated 30 miles per gallon in the city and up to 36 miles per gallon on the highway. Many cars sold today don't even come close to this fuel efficiency.
Safety equipment was standard seat belts and one airbag on the driver's side. The Storm only sold for a little over $10,000 when it came out. The GSi model sold for a little over $14,000.
The Geo Storm was a cool little car for its time. There are still quite a few of these cars on the road today. Some people even outfit Storms with engine modifications and various performance parts. Some Geo Storms have even been entered into professional races.
